MADISON, Wis., Aug. 14 (Nationwide Times) — Augmental’s MouthPad is a custom-fitted mouthpiece that lets users control a phone, tablet or computer with tongue and head movements. The device costs $1,400 for one unit and connects over Bluetooth.
Augmental says MouthPad is designed as an alternative input method for people who have difficulty using a standard mouse, trackpad or touchscreen. It is currently sold and shipped only to U.S. addresses, although the company says the device can be used outside the United States.
How MouthPad works
The device contains a pressure-sensitive touchpad that rests against the roof of the mouth. A user moves a cursor with the tongue or head, then performs gestures for common computer actions.
According to Augmental, pressing the touchpad with the tongue can produce a left click or begin a click-and-drag action. A sip gesture can produce a right click. The device also supports actions such as scrolling, dragging and swiping.
MouthPad sends those commands to connected devices through Bluetooth. Augmental lists compatibility with macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android.
MIT News described the system in 2024 as combining the mouth-based touchpad with motion sensors for head tracking. That report said the device was developed by Augmental for people with movement impairments.
Why the device is custom-fitted
MouthPad is not a one-size-fits-all accessory. Augmental says each unit is made for an individual user after an intraoral or dental 3D scan. The scan captures the shape of the user’s mouth so the company can manufacture a matching device.
Augmental says the scan generally costs between $50 and $150, depending on the provider. The company estimates delivery at about six months after it receives the scan.
The product is intended for people over 18 who have sufficient tongue dexterity, according to Augmental’s product information. The company says the device is meant to provide another way to interact with everyday technology, but the available information does not establish how it performs across different disabilities or users.
What it costs and what remains unclear
Augmental lists one MouthPad at $1,400 and two devices for the same user at $1,900. The company’s announcement said public U.S. sales began July 22, 2026, after an Early Access program that began in 2024.
Some technical details have been reported by technology publications, including more than seven hours of continuous use, a charging time of about 1.5 hours and a weight of roughly 10 grams. Those details are not independently tested in the supplied material, and reports differ on the device’s weight and battery performance.
The available information also does not document independent testing of the device’s accuracy, comfort, effect on speech or accessibility outcomes. It does not establish whether MouthPad has received regulatory clearance or describe an independent security or privacy assessment.
For now, the clearest limitation is availability: Augmental sells and ships the custom device only within the United States. Its Bluetooth connection and lack of geographic restriction may allow use elsewhere, but people outside the U.S. cannot currently order it directly from the company, according to the company’s stated sales policy.
